HHS awards $320 million to boost health workforce

ModernHealthcare.com | September 28 – HHS has awarded $320 million in Affordable Care Act grants to strengthen the health professions workforce, the bulk of which will go toward expanding primary-care needs.

“We have to make sure there are enough primary-care providers so everyone can take advantage of the law’s new protections,” HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius said during a news conference to announce the grants. “Having quality health insurance is important, but it’s not enough if you can’t get a doctor’s appointment.”

Of the $320 million in grants, $253 million will go toward strengthening the primary-care workforce. The grants will be awarded under six health professions programs administered by HHS’ Health Resources and Services Administration.
