28 Oct Harvard plans new primary-care center

ModernHealthcare.com | October 28 – Harvard Medical School is using a $30 million philanthropic gift to establish a new Center for Primary Care, which will focus on researching ways to improve primary care education, research and delivery systems.

The center’s director will hold a new endowed chair at the Cambridge, Mass., medical school, based in the school’s departments of healthcare policy, global health and social medicine. The center will work to attract global experts for symposia and collaboration, and promote active discourse among Harvard-affiliated teaching hospitals and related community-based sites, according to a news release.

The center will also serve as a home for primary-care scholarship and primary-care delivery innovation, as well as exposing primary-care students to opportunities in education, research and practice improvement, the release says.

“This new center will more effectively position HMS to develop programs and train leaders in primary care and health systems research, education and policy,” medical school Dean Jeffrey Flier said in a statement.
